Digital Ear Thermometer – An essential instrument which is becoming even more popular

A digital ear thermometer is a device that records body temperature accurately in a few seconds. The human ear drum is a far better indicator than the conventional spots of measurement like the underarm or under the tongue. The tympanic membrane or the eardrum is directly connected to the temperature controlling centre of the brain, so it gives a more accurate indication of the core body temperature. Latest state-of-art digital technologies have resulted in accurate reading of body temperatures through infrared sensors using thermopiles which generate current according to the heat level and is processed and converted to a temperature reading, and displayed on the screen of the device.

The range of these thermometers varies with that of the human body, usually from 90 to110 degrees Fahrenheit and run on electronic batteries. It is clinically proved that a digital ear thermometer provides a higher degree of accuracy than their conventional calibrated ones. These are becoming increasingly popular when using thermometers among children as they are simple to use even when the toddler is fidgeting around. However, there are a few things that one should keep in mind when using a digital ear thermometer.

(1)    Always keep the user manual in front so that you can get help if something somewhere is not working.
(2)    Before inserting the thermometer inside the ear drum disinfect it with soap or tissue dripped in isopropyl alcohol.
(3)    Gently insert the probe in the ear canal. Do not press or use force as it can cause pain and damage the ear drum.
(4)    Press the button and put on the thermometer. Now it’s ready to measure.
(5)    When you hear the beep sound it means that the temperature reading is completed   and you can take it out and see the reading.
(6)    Notice if there is any “error” on the screen it means that it was not properly inserted or was not in good contact with the canal passage. In that case repeat the procedure.
(7)    Clean and disinfect the digital ear thermometer as before and store it in a safe place away from the reach of children and from any other electric or electro magnetic gadgets.

A digital ear thermometer is clinically gaining popularity worldwide, because of its easy-to-handle qualities and precise measuring abilities. During the swine flu scare, these thermometers   were used on a mass scale, especially in airports in south Asian countries to diagnose the symptoms of the disease.
